Salkantay is a 20,574-foot mountain, the highest of the Cordillera Vilcabamba, part of the Peruvian Andes, to the West of Machu Picchu. You can hike below its snow-capped peak (that has never been summited successfully!) along an icy river and up to 15,300 feet of elevation, rather than slogging the trekker-choked Inca trail. Lima to Cusco.
Lima came and went in a blur. Mainly because we were there for less than 24 hours. We arrived in style on a Cruz del Sur bus, which was decked out beyond belief. Huge leather seats that recline almost flat. Personal TV screens with WiFi. A STEWARDESS, and drink and snack service. All this for less than the cost of a Bolt Bus from New York to DC. Our next bus adventure was from Máncora to Trujillo, Peru, a coastal city just shy of our beach destination: Huanchaco. During the 20-minute taxi ride from Trujillo to Huanchaco, the fishing and surfing (and hostelling) hamlet was obviously much more our speed. Continue reading

We left Cuenca too soon on a nine-hour bus to Máncora, Peru, an infamous party saturated beach town that would serve as another stop en route to Lima. Our bus was set to arrive at 7:00 am and the hostel owner, Jurg, would be there to pick us up. Continue reading
